Celebrating the 50th Year Anniversary for SBYSF!
2018/2019 Annual Appeal is underway!
The Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation is experiencing a banner year and it is only fitting because we are celebrating 50 years of introducing kids to the great sport of sailboat racing in Santa Barbara! The program continues to flourish and grow…..
Nick Kaschak, SBYSF Program Director, and his Team of Coaches offer the best sailboat racing learning experience on the West Coast. Our sailors perform at the top levels of the sport regionally, nationally and at World events. SBYSF sailors perennially place in the top 10% at regattas and are often on the awards podium. The sailors not only learn how to compete, the experience teaches them to be physically self-reliant, independent decision makers, team players, good stewards of the environment and strong competitors – fantastic, life-long lessons.
Participation in the 2018 Summer Program increased 23% over last year’s program and enrollment in the 2018 Fall Semester is up by almost 30% with a record number of novice Optimist and advanced High School sailors.
This World class program is generously supported through tuition payments, a strong performing Endowment and your annual donations.
Key to SBYSF Sailor’s success is the Coaches’ utilization of video documentation of practices and classroom settings to enhance the sailor’s understanding of technique and boat handling. We are currently challenged with our ability to utilize this form of instruction due to classroom limitations. The SBYSF Board is looking into ways to provide a convenient, friendly environment for the kids to view video, debrief after practices and discuss sailing tactics and strategy.
The West Beach facility provides additional sailing opportunities for our sailors who utilize boats that are family owned. The facility needs updating to allow the safe and secure storage of the boats and the sailor’s gear while they are out on the water.
The top priority at SBYSF is always the safety of the sailors. The growth of the program and increased number of sailors on the water necessitates the purchase of an additional coach boat. Adding another boat to our fleet helps provide the best sailor-to-coach ratios for teaching and enhances safety for the kids. In addition, the Ribcraft needs to be repowered due to continual, expensive maintenance of the current engine.
Our goals this year include;
Teaching Facility/Clubhouse $30,000
West Beach Improvements $10,000
Fareast Coach Boat $23,000
Repower Ribcraft Coach Boat $8,000
Travel Grant Program for Advanced Sailors $10,000
We are extremely grateful to have already received a generous donation for $25,000. You can help support Santa Barbara youth sailing too. Your support is crucial to our efforts to maintain the asset inventory and physical facilities necessary for a strong program.
If you are able, we kindly ask for you to make a tax-deductible donation of $250 or more to help us continue to have the best youth sailing program on the West coast. Thank you in advance for your contribution.
Thank you again!
