High School CFJ Sailing
High School CFJ Sailing is designed for sailors 13 to 18 years old either transitioning from a single-handed sailboat or those with limited experience. This is an ideal program for kids who are coming from the Optimist Champ Fleet and for those who currently don’t have a path into double-handed sailing through a High School team. Sailing and racing skills are practiced through instruction on and off the water. The ‘on-the-water’ practice is held in two-person CFJ dinghies. Either a one or two-day per week practice option is available.
High School Varsity Racing
The High School Varsity Racing Program is the premier SBYSF racing program. It is intended for sailors who have graduated from Optimists or other small boats and are 8th grade level students through senior in high school. SBYSF offers a varsity program for high school sailing teams from the greater Santa Barbara area. Our goal is to support a top-level high school program where sailors represent their schools, the coaching staff, SBYSF and SBYC. A rigorous training program with productive practices 2 days a week and a focused regatta schedule are keys to the success of the teams.
The Club Flying Junior (CFJ) Sailboat
The CFJ is a light, maneuverable boat at 13 feet long, 4 feet wide and weighing in around 220 lbs. Slightly shorter, narrower and lighter than the C420, the CFJ is designed to go upwind, fast. Narrow bow entry and a more rounded hull shape than the C420 means better upwind feel at the sacrifice of the ease of planing. Recognizable to many youth sailors who grew up on lakes, ponds, or on the west coast, the Club Flying Junior (CFJ) is often used instead of C420s in youth sailing, high school and collegiate programs. Originating in the mid 20th century in the Netherlands, it has spread to many clubs across the United States. The CFJ’s characteristics have made it a very popular on the west coast and on inland sailing venues.
